Bi-color ametrine presents an attractive look when rough gemstones are carefully chosen to produce a gem that's as close as possible to half amethyst and half citrine. Rarely seen with a perfect half-and-half split, the exact proportions vary slightly, giving each gem a unique appearance. This ametrine coordinates well with either amethyst or citrine, as well as with complementary color gemstones. Ametrine is a rare form of quartz containing both citrine and amethyst; it is created when a temperature gradient exists across the crystal during its formation. Colors range from medium-dark to bright orange in the citrine, and vivid purple to violet purple in the amethyst—larger gemstones present more saturated hues. Almost all ametrine comes from mines in Bolivia. The emerald-cut has a rectangle shape and cut corners. Its facets are concentric planes that resemble stair-steps around the circumference of the gemstone, above and below the girdle.
