German-cut files are graded by the number of teeth, counting teeth parallel to the long axis of the file. German cuts start coarser than Swiss and go finer, offering more increments for more precise cutting. In all cut styles, the higher the number, the finer its cut. Key files are shorter in length than traditional hand files and include a handle that provides comfort and control of the file when in use. The length of a key file is measured from the tip of the file to the end of the handle. Key files are ideal for fast, efficient removal of material from the workpiece for initial shaping, for smoothing and, in finer cuts, for finishing.
