Like rutilated quartz, this tourmalinated quartz is a terrific choice for earrings and other designs when you want a unique look in your design. Each gemstone has its own unique patterning, caused by inclusions of black tourmaline. One of the most common minerals, quartz comes in many varieties and colors. The two main categories are macrocrystalline—which are usually transparent, and crystals are visible—and cryptocrystalline, which appear translucent or opaque. The many varieties of quartz each offer distinct characteristics and, according to folklore, their own powers and purposes. The oval cut is an even, symmetrical shape but elongated. The arrangement of its facets is similar to that of a round brilliant, designed to maximize light and color.
