Gray spinel, a transparent variety of vitreous magnesium aluminum oxide, is relatively hard (7.5–8 on the Mohs hardness scale) and presents a true silvery to medium gray color (not a desaturated black or blue). When faceted, the gemstone offers an unexpected refractive brilliance. Named for its spiky crystal structure from the Latin "spina" (meaning "thorn"), spinel is a vitreous magnesium aluminum oxide.
