The yellow-to-brown metallic sheen of this round marcasite gemstone is reminiscent of old sepia-toned photographs, making it a perfect choice for jewelry that has a vintage style. Marcasite is composed of iron sulfide and, while it is closely related to pyrite, it has a distinctly different crystal structure. Because its structure is orthorhombic (rather than cubic like pyrite), marcasite is less suitable for cutting and faceting and, in many jewelry applications, is actually yellow pyrite. When polished, the gemstone has a bright metallic luster, and ranges in color from pale yellow to brown.
