The swirling Mediterranean-blue color and bold, distinctive matrix of this oval chrysocolla cabochon make it a natural choice for ocean- and water-themed jewelry. This gemstone is on the softer range of the Mohs scale and is ideal for earrings, necklaces and brooches. The blue gem pairs well with both white and yellow metal colors. Chrysocolla is a hydrous copper silicate. It can contain traces of copper, iron and manganese oxides, and displays unique veining patterns. It is often mistaken for turquoise because the two minerals are so visually similar. Chrysocolla is named for the Greek words for gold (chrysos) and glue (kolla), thought to be due to its resemblance to a material used by Theophrastus in 315 BCE to solder gold.
