This Fretz® jeweler's sledge hammer is ideal for forging heavy wire, rod or sheet; the large, heavy head on a sturdy, shortened handle maximizes the effectiveness of each blow, moving metal quickly and making shaping metal less labor-intensive. This hammer has one round flat face and one cross-peen face. The flat face, relatively small compared to the head, is designed to keep the work visible as the hammer descends toward the metal. The cross-peen face, used to draw metal lengthwise or to widen, curves slightly toward the user to complement the natural radius motion of the wrist when hammering. Designed by Bill Fretz, this jeweler's hammer is built for toughness, durability and economy of effort. The substantial, curved handle makes the hammer comfortable and easy to hold; when using the cross-peen face, the design encourages the user to choke up on the handle, providing increased control with a light feel. The handle is made of Padauk, known for its strength, stability and beauty, and is oil-finished. The head is cast from 420-grade stainless steel and tool hardened to 50 HRC for maximum durability and effectiveness.
