This tag has a full-hard temper; it is significantly work-hardened and, though it does not bend readily, it stubbornly holds its shape after forming. Gold-filled items are made by heat- and pressure-bonding a layer of 14K (or 12K) gold to a base-metal core. The 14/20 notation refers to the ratio of karat gold to base-metal core by weight; the first figure is the karat value of the gold layer, the second is the total percentage (by weight) of precious metal contained in the item. On double-clad items, the quantity of precious metal is divided between the upper and lower surfaces of the core metal.
