This natural pink opal cabochon features a heart shape with straight side with a flat top and bottom. It displays a range of soft pink colors and is a beautiful choice for bracelets, pendants and anklets. It looks great when set in a bezel mounting for a custom pendant, or when combined with an assortment of pastel-color stones for more complex matched sets including bracelets and brooches. Without the play of color typical of other opals, natural pink opal is a combination of opal, palygorskite, and chalcedony. It presents a range of soft-pink tones, and has been called 'pink Andes opal.' The colors of this stone make it beautiful in its own right, and the stone is ideal as an alternative to endangered shell and pink coral. Opal is a relatively soft mineral that comprises silicon and water and is characterized by and valued for its display of flashing rainbow colors, referred to as the "play-of-color." There are many different varieties, with stone colors ranging from white or light gray to brown or red to black. While opal may be found in either sedimentary deposits or in volcanic deposits; the volcanic stones tend to be brittle and more fragile than the sedimentary stones.
